The Pittsfield Suns outdone by Pena and the Torrington Titans, 5-3

PITTSFIELD, MA (August 2nd, 2015) – The Suns’ effort Sunday afternoon was just not strong enough as the Torrington Titans outlasted Pittsfield 5-3 at Wahconah Park.

The Suns put the game’s first run on the board in the top of the second inning. DH Dan Palazzo led off the frame with a double, and red-hot first baseman Brendan Geary bounced a single past third base to score Palazzo, putting the Suns on top 1-0.

However, the Titans took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Third baseman Mike Conti singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice groundout by second baseman Dean Lockery. First baseman Zach Wood singled, and Conti reached third base and scored on two wild pitches by Suns starter Adam Erkis. Catcher Nick Garland followed with a walk, and Wood scored on centerfielder Joe Paparelli’s sacrifice groundout. That officially put the Suns past the Titans for the rest of the ballgame.

The Titans piled on two more runs in the fifth inning. An error by Erkis allowed right fielder Tyler Bindi to score, and Lockery singled in shortstop Jeremy Peña to extend Torrington’s lead to 4-1.

No runs would score until the top of the seventh inning. Peña legged out a triple, and scored from third when a Mike Conti grounder skipped through the legs of Suns’ third baseman Casey McCone. The Titans took a 5-1 lead on McCone’s miscue.

The Suns generated a small threat in the eight inning. Left fielder Hunter Bross singled and scored on right fielder Derek Bauer’s triple. Bauer then crossed home as catcher Derek Gardella’s single through the hole between first and second base. The Titans lead was then cut to 5-3.

But Pittsfield’s bats would go quiet in the 9th, as pitcher Alex Fishberg notched a win for Torrington, picking up his third save of the season. Titans starter John Russell was extremely solid, earning the win after pitching six innings of six hit, one run ball. Russell walked one batter and struck out six.

Adam Erkis received the loss for the third time in four starts, allowing four runs over 4.1 winnings of work.

The Suns return to Wahconah Park on Thursday, August 6th to face the Bristol Blues in a double-header. The first seven-inning game is slated 6 PM. For tickets please call (413)445-SUNS or visit pittsfieldsuns.com.
